Political Correctness, Are We Overdoing It?

Political Correctness, Are We Overdoing It?

We have been through the Stone Age, not only physically but also mentally. Our mentality stayed in the Dark Ages for a long time. We abused our women, discriminated against the minorities, killed the weak, and rooted for the powerful. The situation is not all rosy today. We still abuse and rape women, minorities are still being mistreated in many societies, and the weak are still helpless, but some things have changed. The supporters of the powerful tyrants are being opposed. The supporters of the weak have increased in number. Women have started raising their voices for their rights. The thing that has changed is this: we have become more aware.

This awareness brought positive changes in our society. #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter are just a few examples of how awareness has helped people stand up against the oppressors and for the victims. Everyone thought that things will only move forward in the right direction from now on. But the one thing that we failed to understand is that extremism, whether it is depicted by the rightists or the leftists, is a bad thing. When those who claimed to be woke turned out to be extremists, things got a little out of hand.

The cancel culture has made people, especially those on the internet, think that they can do whatever they want in the name of political correctness. If we want to use the political correctness card in the right way, we need to understand the difference between our personal biases and genuine wrongdoings of a person. Just because you hate an actor doesn' mean you can cancel them for breathing in the same room as a Trump supporter. Just because you are a feminist doesn't mean you have to support a woman even when she is wrong. Let the Amber Heard case serve as a reminder that anyone can lie in the name of feminism and oppression.

Another term that we need to stop throwing around every time we want is toxic masculinity. Ever since the trailer for the new Joker movie came out, some people are tweeting against it claiming that it promotes toxic masculinity. It is a movie about a villain and psychopathy is not the same as toxic masculinity. Art is supposed to be controversial. If it doesn't disturb you then what's the point of it? Maybe it is time that we learn to use our political correctness and 'wokeness' for things that really matter and not for settling our personal prejudices.
