The internet is a wild place where people say anything they want without giving it much thought. I can't remember the number of times I have seen the phrase "this satisfied my OCD" on the internet...
For centuries the world did not consider mental illnesses real. Some patients were treated by priests, claiming they are possessed by demons. Some had to face torture in the so-called mental asylums. But slowly the situation began to change, at least in some parts of the world. In our country, however, the situation is not any better. Sure, there are no torture places for the mentally ill, but there are no good places for these people either.
Fighting mental illness is not the sole job of the one who is suffering. When a viral infection starts affecting people, the treatment also involves the whole community. The same way mental illnesses require a whole framework for their treatment. But we don't even have enough therapists in our country, dreaming for a supportive environment is a futile thing to do.
So what do we do, the ones who are suffering and see no solution in sight? Do we strive for betterment? Do we try to set up a network of support groups all over the country so we can get together with the ones who get us and discuss the things that only they would understand? Should we battle our demons individually and then think of everyone else too? As someone who is tired of fighting their demons, that sounds like a lot.
I don't think there is one simple solution to this problem and maybe it IS a losing battle. If I said something optimistic, it will be a betrayal to everyone's struggles so I won't do that. The one thing we can do is to make sure we are there for our friends and family when they are suffering like us. We can do with small support groups of two people, at least for now.
